 You might have got this word brain fog. It is not a medical condition, but it is a symptom of other medical conditions that can cause memory problems, mental clarity, poor concentration and inability to focus. In simple terms, brain fog means when an individual feel sluggish and fuzzy.

Let’s understand this with an example. You might be travelling abroad and suffering from jet lag. As a result, it feels like 2 a.m. in midday. So, to overcome jetlag, you took medicine and slept well, and with time, it got normal. But if this sluggish behaviour continues for long, it can turn into brain fog. It can be in many forms like lack of sleep, anxiety, poor nutrition, or other factors.

1) If you are not getting proper sleep, the brain won’t get enough time to reorganize itself and function normally.

2) Keeping your body hydrated is very important. We have studies that almost 73% of our body is made up of water. So if you have poor hydration habits, it can affect your high mental performance and clarity.

3) Nutrition plays a crucial role in the overall mental and physical development of the individual. If you keep eating fast food and sugars, it’s going to affect your mental clarity.

4) Lack of exercise can make you feel sluggish, and as a result, it can increase your heart rate and affect your brain cell growth.

5) If you have been suffering from panic attacks, anxiety or stress for a long time, this will regularly release stress hormones in your body. It will lead to dizziness and sluggish behaviour.

Apart from these five factors, other factors like vitamin deficiency, head injury, chronic diseases like lupus, drug and alcohol addiction and chemotherapy can result in brain fog. In the second wave of Covid-19, we noticed that some people were suffering from brain fog as a Covid-19 side effect.

How to get over brain fog?

To overcome brain fog, you need to clean up your diet and start eating healthy. As mentioned above, nutrition plays a crucial role in the growth of the individual. Try to eat green leafy vegetables like broccoli, or you can go for Pumpkin seeds, dark chocolate nuts like walnut, fatty fish or frozen blueberries.

Try to enhance your sleeping schedule. Try to sleep at least for 8 hours; this will help your brain repair and restore itself. Brain and sleep are related to each other, so it is essential to sleep well.

No matter how busy your schedule is, try to work out it at least three to four times a week. It will keep you active, alert and help in improving your concentration and memory. Regular exercise also helps in enhancing management, coordination, and planning skills. After a workout, try to do meditation for at least half an hour regularly to keep your mind calm and composed. This will help reduce your mental stress.
