History of Char Dham

Yamunotri Dham

Yamunotri is located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, Yamunotri Dham is the first stop in the pilgrimage. It believed that bathing in its water cleanses all sins and avoids abnormal and painful death. Apart from Yamuna Devi (Goddess), the idol of Ganga Devi is also located in the revered temple.

There are several hot springs near the temple; Surya Kund is the most important among them. Devotees boil rice and potatoes in the Kunda and accept it as Prasad of the Goddess. Yamuna Devi believed to be the daughter of Surya and the twin sister of Yama. It is said that the sage Asit Muni lived here and washed in both the Ganges and the Yamuna. At his mature age, when he couldn’t visit Gangotri,

Gangotri Dham

Gangotri Dham is devoted to the goddess Ganga, who is said to have come to Earth to free the wrongdoings of humankind. The Ganges River begins from the Gomukh, Gangotri Glacier which is around 18 km from the city of Gangotri. Situated in the Uttarkashi region of Uttarakhand, the first sanctuary of Gangotri was underlying the mid-nineteenth century by Amar Singh Thapa, a Gorkha general.

It is accepted that King Sagar played out an Ashwamedha yagna and sent 60,000 of his children with a pony. Horses lost; Seeking the horse at the hermitage of the monk Kapila, 60,000 sons attacked the ashram and the distraught sage who was in deep meditation. When the angry sage Kapila opened his fiery eyes, all 60,000 sons turned into ashes.

Later, on Kapila’s advice, Anshuman (grandson of Sagar) started praying to the Goddess Ganga and requested him to clean the ashes of his relatives and were to come to earth to grant them salvation. Anshuman failed in his goal; It was his grandson Bhagiratha, whose rigorous meditation brought the Ganges down to earth. Lord Shiva tied the Ganges and distributed its water in many rivers to save the earth with its powerful force.

Kedarnath Dham

Located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, Kedarnath is the most remote pilgrimage place in the yatra. It is believed that originally the temple of Kedarnath was built by the Pandavas. And Adi Shankaracharya found the present structure built in the 8th century near the old temple site.

Where is it that the Pandavas were searching for Lord Shiva to sacrifice himself from his sins committed on the battlefield of Mahabharata? Lord Shiva was not going to forgive him so easily, so he transformed himself into an ox and reached the Garhwal Garhwal area of Uttarakhand.

When found by the Pandavas, he hid in the ground. Different forms of God are found in different parts of the country — veil in Kedarnath, arms in Tugan, navel in mid-Maheshwar, face in Rudranath, and hair in Kalpeshwar. These five sites are called Panch-Kedar. The Pandavas built temples at each of the five places.

Badrinath Dham

Badrinath is considered one of the holiest places in Hinduism. The Badrinath temple, one of the 108 Divya Desams, is part of both Char Dham and Chota Char Dham. Adi Shankaracharya found the idol of Lord Badri in the Alaknanda River and placed it in a cave near Tape Kund. In the 16th century, a Garhwal king built the temple, which has been rebuilt several times as a result of natural disasters. Between the Nara and Narayan peaks, the beauty of Badrinath Dham is further enhanced by the magnificent backdrop of the Neelkanth peak.

According to one of the legends, Lord Vishnu’s gracious lifestyle criticized by a sage, after which Vishnu went to meditation here as an act of penance. Goddess Lakshmi (his wife) became a berry tree to shade from the sun and other harsh elements of nature. Another divine legend states that Badrinath was the realm of Shiva. Vishnu misleads Shiva to leave this place and establish himself.
